I posed the same question to my dissertation adviser, who replied,"Anyone can get a Ph.D., but only a few of those attain the rank of professor." That makes good sense, I think.

So glad someone has a thorough knowledge of Latin. Finding the etter can be a challenge!

Very interesting. And while I think I know what "et seq." means, why don't you share that with the rest of us? Your explanations are much more colorful than the dictionary!

Redundancies I’ve just received an email message from some entrepreneur offering me a “free gift” if I will click on something. “Free gift” is redundant. A gift is by definition free. If the “gift” is not free, then it is not a gift. Reminds me...

Outsiders welcome

Hello! I’m sending this note to a half-dozen people
who joined Webgrammar.ning.com but, so far as I know,
never appeared at the site or sought help with problems in
grammar or usage. Speaking for myself, I’m at webgrammar
because I believe in doing whatever I can to help people and
because I miss teaching---I’m a retired professor and a

Thanks Harold! It's morning now and I'm getting ready to work - write, write, write!! Keeps me out of trouble mostly! And definitely eats into my surfing social media time! But it pays the bills!

Hi Harold! I'm sorry I haven't been online much. Nothing you said...I just belong to too many things and don't get around to all of them like I'd like!

Hi Cartoon,
Sorry for the delayed. I'm from Argentina. I'm adult, I work for 2 Commerce Chambers in the food and environmental branch. I'm preparing for FCE, I hope I'm doing it next march.
You've mentioned in a comment that I'd have my first grammar exam the next morning, and that Judy could tell me what to study, but I don't know how to do that.
