I find punctuation and verb subject to be the most common errors when I edit.

Re your suggestion that C. Professor write an article, it happens that I've been tinkering with something tied to right- and left-handedness and the prejudices against left-handers. Historically, right was dexter

Hi,

There are 16,14,13. I've always been a stickler with English and Math. I'm trying to find ways to improve the two younger sons writing skills. They have great ideas and I need them to learn how to express them better on paper. You know, on run on sentences, unnecessary words, using the correct tense throughout the writing......

I'm trying to stress to them the importance of English today. If they can't communicate clearly and effectively throughout life they won't be productive.

I think it's working! Our youngest, 13, is now correcting his older brother's grammatically.

I tell them don't know all of the grammar rules or all of the correct usages of words, etc. But I try to be as correct as I can when speaking and communicating with others.

I tell them to use the internet or the MANY Language Arts textbooks and grammar books I have in the house when they get stuck on an idea or how to use a word correctly.

I just ask them to TRY there best! But they must try! And I'm the judge of determining if they are trying. Not there teachers! I say this because sometimes I feel 'some' teachers don't push them to be more responsible. I LOVE my school district and the teachers! I admire all teachers for their dedication! I'm just saying I'm their mother and I know when they haven't tried their best.

I'm soooooooo glad I stumbled on your site the other day. I'm anxious to use it and let my guys know about it too!

Thanks in advance for developing the site! It's something we all need in my opinion!

By the way, I now have a T-shirt with the cartoon professor on the front! I suppose I should wear it whenever I'm "here." hvc

This from Adarsh, who continues to prepare for the GRE. Has anyone encountered "mugging up"?
"I am mugging up the word list." -- Adarsh, part of his response to my asking whether he had taken the exam yet.
I like it, but don't understand the allusion. [More on "allusion" later.] -- hvc

Hi! I left this message on Monday (2/17), inviting comment. Here it is again: At 2:58pm on February 16, 2009, Harold V. Cordry said… I received an email about President's Day, informing me that it was observed on every third Monday in February. -- hcordry

Hi! Yes, I did write a crossword puzzle book for some publisher who had a series of "everything" books. So mine was "Everything Crossword Puzzles and Word Games" (or the other way around). Did you look me up? I also wrote a reference book about tobacco, which sold pretty well. And two or three others, which I can't remember just now. My main interest is English usage. I'd intended to do one on usage.

Judy, I only recall ONE class with the esteemed H.V. Cordry that was an intense study of the AP Stylebook, which I keep handy on my desk at all times to this day. Most of my learning from him was done at the keyboards and paste-up boards of my college newspaper. As to your continued arc of learning, isn't it wonderful? If you're not learning, you're not growing and if you're not growing you're dying, correct! And none of us has yet reached THAT advanced an age to consider dying a positive state!

He was an absolute joy and conundrum to have as an instructor. I suspect he felt I was a bit flighty at the time as well. But then, isn't that what college is for? Judy, from whence do you hail and how did you come to start this site?
